Laugh.

Laugh, v.- To express certain emotions, especially mirth or delight, by a series of spontaneous, usually unarticulated sounds often accompanied by corresponding facial and bodily movements.

Laughter is a gateway emotion. To share a true, deep, honest laugh with someone creates a connection that is on par with opening your heart to them, to letting them see the real you. These type of laughs can’t be planned, can’t be foreseen and certainly aren’t pretty. These are the laughs where you have tears running down your face, where you might almost pee your pants, where you can’t breathe, and, for some, where snorting happens. These are the ugly, beautiful and pure laughs that solidify friendships.

I heard one time that “if you can laugh with someone, you can cry with them.” And over the years I have found this to be exceptionally true.

As one who errs on the side of being guarded, a challenge of living in a transient community is cultivating deep friendships. Its easy to know people on a surface level, its hard to find the people I can show my heart to. Though I’m a people person I’m very slow to let people really know me. I’m thankful God knows this about me and thankful that, in spite of myself, I’ve made some great, honest friends here. And while some friendships build over time, others are created in a single moment, and I am very thankful for the blessing of a girl’s getaway to the south island and one really epic shared experience.

What started as a simple, quick trip to see the sand dunes turned into a long, hot and painful walk made worse by the fact that were lost and in flip flops. In such a situation you can do one of two things: laugh or cry. Mostly we chose to laugh (though to be honest there was a moment where I did almost cry). As I write this I know that to all but three of you it doesn’t seem that funny, you probably wonder why I’m sharing it, its an inside joke hanging in the air. But I share it because that little hell walk solidified some friendships and was an answer to a prayer. Just the mention of water and snacks will make our lips curl up in a smile and hearing someone mention going back to the camels makes us laugh a little inside. I will always be able to look back and pinpoint the moment I knew these are friends I can share life with, that I can be honest with. And it reminds me to be thankful for the friends I have around the world that all started with an uncontrollable laugh.
